Sasan Gir is the home of Asiatic Lion Situated in Junagadh District in Gujarat and spread in the huge area of 1412 Square Km. It is the sole home of the Asiatic lion and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia. It is a natural habitat which is a home not only for the King of the jungle but for varieties of tiny birds, crocodiles, deer, Leopards, Hyenas etc.
We took a weekend trip to this majestic land in the month of March. Lions always fascinate most of us as this creature is so royal and Giant who walks royally, undisturbed and unfazed in his own world, as if he knows, he is the king.
The most interesting fact I came to know that the local Maldhari community has lived here for generations and still coexist magnificently with the wilderness. They sustain themselves by grazing their livestock and harvesting what they need from the forest. The thought of living in a jungle with the presence wild lions gave me Goosebumps and don’t know how the people of this community has got this courage.
Anyway, coming back to the trip details, Gir national park is divided into two zones
- Interpretation Zone which is open from Morning: 08:00 to 11:00, Afternoon: 15:00 to 17:00 only. Can be booked on the spot.
- Main Gir ( Safari) Timings : 6.00 AM to 9.00 AM, 9.00 AM to 12.00 PM, 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM. You can book the safari only online through girlion.in
We went to Devaliya Gir interpretation zone situated amidst of thick and huge forest area. One can see ‘n’ number of trees all around but nothing else which is quite picturesque.
Chances of seeing a lion here are very good. This place is apt for shorter trips.
You can find many small resorts where you can stay overnight. The people here are so warm and loving, who served you with the best of their smile and delicious home cooked food.
By the time we reached interpretation Zone of Gir, it was 1’oclock and the zone is closed for few hours, so we went to a small local dhabha (restaurant) in the close vicinity of mango trees. The place was very authentic and relaxing. We had our lunch there; my taste buds are still relishing the taste of that food till now. We plucked so many raw mangoes from that area too.
At 3’o clock we reached back to Devalia for spotting the royalness. One has to pay desired fees and get a pass to board small busses which took their turn to roam inside that zone.
